Light Of The World

20101212

The man sat and begged; he could not see
Jesus passed by, He who wept in Gethsemane
In an instant, He saw the need
Put clay and spit and made that sit
On the blind man’s eye, and told him, “Go”
In Siloam’s pool, as in Calvary’s flow
To wash his blindness away.*

Old Simeon was ready to depart
But one thing searched he in his heart:
When he would see man’s salvation
Then with turtle doves for dedication
To the temple His parents and Jesus came
Simeon’s heart soared: sin would be maimed
The Light of the world had come.**

Like he who begged, we could not see
Till Jesus hung on Calvary’s tree
When 2,000 years past, Jesus passed by
To wash our sin and open our eyes
As first light of morning, clear skies after rain***
Salvation secured, God’s favour obtained
His Light dispels shadows.

To all who believe Him, He illumines the heart
May we walk in His ways and never depart
To keep Him always our first love of loves
The glory of the Father in heaven above
So gave He sight to the blind, to Simeon insight
May our darkness be bathed in love’s pure light:
Christ is the Light of the world.

Interesting Note: Based on Leviticus 12:2-4 the baby Jesus would be more than 40 days old when, after the custom of purification after the birth of a son, Mary presented herself (with Joseph and Jesus) at the Temple in Jerusalem.
