When we go through pain and suffering, we usually have friends coming to us telling us that they understand how we feel. But do they really? You wonder. Well, there is one person who has gone through every single emotion and trial that people can ever go through. He has experienced rejection, treachery, hatred, unjustified accusations, unfair scorning, painful whipping and senseless mocking. He is not just able to sympathise, but also to empathize with us because he has gone through it all (Heb. 2:18). However, there is one glaring difference between us and Him. Unlike us humans with our sinful nature, He was a perfect man, who deserved nothing like this, but chose to go through everything that He may understand what we have to go through.
He even went through the highest form of temptation by the devil but still held on to His commitment to God’s will (ref. Matt. 4:1-11). Many may not fully understand the extent of what He went through since we think that He is God who became man. But let us not forget that He was 100% man and went through the same emotions of pain, fear and trauma as we have to go through. This Great High Priest is greater than any other Jewish high priests. These high priests can only go before God for the people in the Holy of Holies in the Temple in Jerusalem once a year. Our Great High Priest is always our Advocate at God’s throne of grace in heaven, interceding for us.
With such a Great High Priest praying for us, the fear and shame can be replaced with the confidence that Jesus has promised us. He understands what we have to go through in life and He promises us His strength, mercy and grace to pull us through – all the time. Pray and ask Him for strength, for guidance and for wisdom and He will grant it to you. Let us not undermine what He has done for us and hold firm to the faith we tell others we have in Him. It is not easy but remember that Jesus has been there, done that. Our Great High Priest will help us – He keeps His promise to us.
